Former UK PM Liz Truss in Taiwan to support their democracy from Chinese turbulence

Former British Prime Minister, Liz Truss is in Taiwan this week to show her support for the island democracy in the wake of daily belligerence by the peoples Republic of China. China insist that Taiwan is part of their territory much like they did with Tibet. The main difference between Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950 and today is the vast growth of China’s military machine since the occupational period of Tibet.

The PLAN (People’s Liberation Army - Navy), and PLAF (People’s Liberation Air Force) has grown exponentially, in particular, sense the millennium. They are truly a force in the Indo Pacific, and are actively training and expanding to exert their influence in international waters.

It is understandable, then, that Ms. Truss would continue with her opposition to China’s belligerence and “wolf warrior“ diatribe, even as a MP in British parliament, in order to exert influence in the international community to warn of and support Taiwanese democracy and sovereignty.

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak spoke of closing Confucius Institutes within Great Britain approximately one year ago. These institutes are supposed to instil Chinese values and culture in those communities. However, observance of the Confucius institutes  find they are proponents of the CPC (Chinese Communist Party.) We have these institutions in Canada and I know we have one on the campus of the University of Waterloo. Now, the University of Waterloo is very happy to receive Chinese students to stay for obvious reasons: financial, they work hard, and are generally intelligent. In addition, Chinese police stations are being opened in various countries. They claim that these "service centers" are operating  to assist Chinese citizens to do things like renew drivers licenses. However, some Chinese individuals are being harassed by Chinese officials from these “police stations“ to return to China to take care of personal business. They are being harassed. The Canadian, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has Canadian officials looking into these police stations, one of which is in Toronto, Ontario Canada. It appears that it is still operational. Mr. Trudeau has been criticized for Chinese interference in the last election, and seems to be going soft on Beijing, although recently the Foreign Affairs office  has expelled a Chinese diplomat (Zhao Wei) from Canada based for that individuals harassment of a Conservative Party of Canada  MP - Michael Chong, whose family was being harassed in Hong Kong. Chong brought forth a Motion in Parliament in February 2021 condemning Chins treatment of the Uyghur population.

Therefore, it really is time for global leaders like Justin Trudeau, Joe, Biden, Emmanuel Macron, and others to decouple from China in a realistic manner in order to maintain our way of life within the rules- based international order that supports freedom of speech, human rights, freedom of expression, and the sanctity of the vote. We are at a critical stage and we can’t just enjoy those goods that come from China to support our way of life. Western powers and others  need to start development in the building of products with our own folks to sustain our way of life. Canada has rare earths, as one example and natural energy products and sustainable energy expertise to draw to bolster job growth and mute the reliance on China.

Moreover, as Michael Chong states, Canadian security is lacking compared to the UK and US and Canadian security would do well to ensure that information is made available to MP's and in the House of Commons.

Like the Uyghur's, the international community needs to be cognizant of China's impact on the Tibetan way of life as Chinese officials are   "...banning their language, engaging in non-consensual DNA collection, and separating families in the Himalayan region."
